Republic Exhibition - 2020

Republic Exhibition - 2020

PURPOSE

The exhibition is organized by the Türkiye Fotoğraf Sanatı Federasyonu (TFSF) as a tribute to our Republic and its founders, with the aim of documenting successful works in the art of photography in Türkiye as the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic approaches, preserving contemporary photography for future generations, and supporting artistic production.

The organization, which will be held for the first time by TFSF this year, is intended to become a traditional “prestige” photography exhibition rather than a photography competition.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

a. Open to all photography artists over the age of 18 who possess a valid Turkish Republic ID number.

b. Membership in any association is not required for participation.

c. Everyone may participate except the Exhibition Curator, Jury Members, and their first-degree relatives. (Members of the TFSF Board of Directors and TFSF Competition Representatives may also participate.)

d. Individuals who are under restriction by TFSF (whose restriction period ends after the final submission date of the exhibition) may not participate.

GENERAL RULES

a. Participation is free of charge.

b. The exhibition has no specific theme. (Participants may choose any subject such as Documentary, Architecture, Nature, Surrealism, People, Animals, Sports, etc.)

c. Participation is open to all techniques. (Color, monochrome, long exposure, photo manipulation, etc. may be used.)

d. Entries may be submitted digitally in black-and-white or color format, with a maximum file size of 4 MB. If necessary, the original file of the photograph may be requested from the participant for exhibition and catalog purposes.

e. A participant may submit a maximum of 2 (two) photographs belonging to themselves for selection.

f. A maximum of 1 (one) photograph per participant may be accepted for the exhibition.

g. The number of selected works each year is limited to the age of the Republic. For the 2020 exhibition, a total of 97 photographs will be selected.

h. Participants whose photographs are selected for the exhibition will receive a specially designed participation certificate from TFSF featuring their selected photograph.

i. The submitted photograph must belong to the participant.

j. Photographs that have previously received awards or exhibition acceptances in competitions may also be submitted.

k. Participation in the exhibition means granting permission for the selected photographs to be used by TFSF in national and international events, virtual presentations, and curated selections, with the participant’s name credited.

l. A catalog of the selected photographs will be prepared. The catalog will be provided free of charge to participants whose works are selected for the exhibition, while others may obtain it from TFSF for a specified fee.

m. A photograph once selected for the exhibition may not be submitted to future editions of the exhibition. However, other non-selected photographs may be submitted again in subsequent years.

n. Having a photograph selected for the exhibition does not prevent that photograph from being submitted to TFSF-approved competitions.

o. The exhibition has been included in the “TFSF Prestige Events” list. Participants whose photographs are selected for the exhibition will be considered to have fulfilled the “Prestige Event” participation requirement for FIAP title applications.

JURY AND SELECTION PRINCIPLES

a. Each year, a three-member Jury is appointed by the TFSF Board of Directors to select the photographs to be included in the exhibition.

b. Individuals actively serving on the TFSF Board of Directors may not serve as Jury Members.

c. Jury Members may serve only once. (A different jury is appointed each year.)

d. Due to the pandemic, this year’s jury evaluation will be conducted remotely online without physical gathering.

e. In the first stage, Jury Members will independently select 97 photographs each. (Thus, a total of 97 × 3 selections will be made in the first stage.) The selected photographs will be collected by the exhibition curator, who will calculate how many Jury Members selected each photograph and rank them according to the number of votes received. Photographs selected by 2 or more Jury Members will be included in the final exhibition list. If the total number does not reach 97, second and/or third evaluation stages will be conducted among photographs selected by at least one Jury Member. These stages will continue until the number reaches 97. In cases of ties or similar situations, the final decision belongs to the exhibition curator.

f. Each year, the President of the TFSF Board of Directors serves as the exhibition curator. For 2020, the Exhibition Curator is Dr. Sefa Ulukan.

g. Jury Members of the TFSF “Republic Exhibition 2020”:

i. Assoc. Prof. Dr. A. Beyhan Özdemir, Dokuz Eylül University Department of Photography

ii. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülbin Özdamar Akarçay, Osmangazi University Department of Visual Communication Design
